I’m back, and I promise not to wear the beige suit ever again.

I will break this down quite casually.

MOST LIKELY RUNNING

Kermit Staggers for At Large seat left vacant by Vern ‘The Velvet Hammer’ Brown

Kenny Anderson Jr., the incumbent. Not sure who would run against him?

Mark Millage vs. appointed goat roaster Dean Karsky & Hutch.

UP IN THE AIR

Greg Jamison running for a second term.

RUMORS AND GOSSIP

I have nothing. I have not heard one peep about anybody else considering running for office. And why would I? We got our events center, what more could we need?

18 Thoughts on “Who is running for SF city council this spring?

  1. Go Kermit!

There should be a KERMIT STAGGERS BUT HE NEVER FALLS DOWN sign in EVERY yard. Start the groundswell of support today!

  3. That is going to be an interesting race. I’m sure the big money boys in town will get some young buck professional to run against him with a swell haircut and a great smile. Personally I wish we were sending Kermit back to the legislature they need some shaking up.

Kermit is going to have a rough run for an at large seat.
    1) There is going to be someone (with a fair bit of money behind them) running on the ‘Anybody but Kermit’ ticket. We all know that worked last time. He’s not running in his district where he has the most people who support him. This will cause him trouble.

    2) He REALLY shot himself in the foot after the last mayoral campaign when he signed on to be Gordon “I’m batshit crazy” Howie’s running mate before Howie was even the nominee.

I can’t stress enough how much damage this did to him. I voted for Kermit in the past. I personally like him. But I don’t know if I can vote for him simply based off of this one thing.

You can tell a lot about someone based off of who they associate themselves with. He made a very bad choice here that shows either a tragic lack of judgement or a sympathetic leaning towards the South Dakota John Birch society(er…that would be Sibby, Stace Nelson, Gordon Howie, Leslie Unruh, etc.). Either one of those is bad. I don’t know if I can vote against him, but unless he does something to convince me otherwise I can’t vote for him.

  5. Whoa, Whoa, Whoa. I would have to agree, I was not to pleased with his tea party association and Howie. But to claim Kermit has some association with the John Birch society is way over the top. Did you know him and his wife have an adopted son from a foreign country? He is currently serving in the Peace Corps and has for years. Kermit is the farthest thing from a racist you could come. He has taught in two foreign countries and is one of the nicest people I know. Does he agree with some tea party issues? Yup, but so do I, but I would never join rank and file with them. You really need to do your research on the John Birch society before accusing GOOD people of being a part of it, or better yet just STFU.

  6. if enough pro e.c. downtown people get elected, can they switch the site if they haven’t broken ground, since this was only an advisory vote anyway?

  7. As far as I am concerned the whole election was null and void due to the ethics issues with Entenman and spending taxpayer money on PRO-EC presentations by city directors.

When you flat out omit or lie about the deets it should be a hung jury. But the only people being hung is the city taxpayers.

  8. 13, way to go! You’re the first commenter I’ve ever seen that knows what the John Birch Society was, good for you. Howie and company knowingly pander to Birch, 912, Tea Party, et. al, types without shame. This weird west river anarchist movement has been around forever, the current cabal are simply exploiting it for their own ends.

Kermit made a huge, huge mistake aligning him with those nuts. I would expect somebody who spent time in the legislature to understand these guys, especially a poli sci prof. He won’t recover from this one.

  9. I hope Deb Owens runs. I don’t know what her stance is on most issues, but I will vote for her just to see the fireworks.

If nothing else, she won’t be another “yes man” to the mayor, which immediately makes her a better choice than some of the current councilors.

  10. Deb probably won’t run for CC, but don’t count her out for mayor.

Lewis – you do realize that the John Birch Society isn’t a racist group? They are an Ultra-Conservative, Small Government (to the extreme),conspiracy-centric, Fundamentalist Christian, Anti-Communist/ Socialist/ Liberal group. They have nothing against any race or color…so long as they follow their particular world view. They are about three steps past the Tea Party in terms of how far right they are. This is the group who accused President Eisenhower of being a communist. Who try to kill social security, welfare, Medicare, Medicaid, and pretty much every other social safety net program out there (because It’s…Socialism!!!) .
Even if Kermit does not follow their world view(and I don’t believe he does), Gordon Howie does or at least appears to. And this is who Kermit decided to associate himself with.

  12. Kermit has reassured me he has not connection to the group and takes deep offense. There are threads of the group that are extremely racist and cross ties with the KKK. As for associations, I associate myself with a lot of people but that doesn’t mean I have the same political views as them. If they want to make the Howie thing an issue in the campaign, so be it. But as I have told my friends state politics and city politics are two different animals and I haven’t lost faith in Kermit as a politician because of it.

I hope Millage runs, but I honestly think he is so much smarter, educated on city issues, and savier than most of the city council (especially Karsky) that he probably would make most of them drool on themselves wondering what he just said. We need people like Mark Millage, Debra Owen and those of the like to bring some intelligence, integrity, and confidence back to the city council.

  14. Would agree. I may have a answer about Mark very soon.

  15. I give my wife credit if the biege suit is gone. She called him on it at a mayoral candidate panel thingy… and he soon went to navy blazer on his tv ads. So she gets props if he stays in strong colors.

  16. I told him I like the Fonzi outfit he wore at the AL debate. Red turtleneck with a black leather jacket. He should have worn a cowboy hat to, that would have kicked ass. I have often thought if I ever did run for office I would wear a black t-shirt and jeans to all of my campaign appearances.

  17. l3wis – black t & jeans would win the Event Center roadies constituency!

  18. I had lunch with Millage today. He is not sure if he is running or not. So it is a big question mark. BUT, I did encourage him to run.
