Yes on 14 for more handouts to business

How ironic they use a picture of Cherapa Place, receiver of one of the largest taxpayer handouts. And I guess they want to drive that message home by having the meeting at Cherapa Place. It’s no secret that Darrin Smith is a supporter of the governor’s initiative.

A South DaCola foot soldier just sent me this piece of info;

Remember the pile of rubble from the river ramp that they moved from the middle of the river up onto the East Bank.  YES, that same pile that Lloyd told the Council it would be removed by Tuesday, June 19th at the latest.  It’s still sitting in a heap on the East Bank. There is a $75,000 fine written into the River Ramp Agreement if the demolition is not completed within 90 days. That deadline has past.

Vice President Ironic Johnny Rachel Thune-Bag? (H/T – Helga)

SOOOOOOOOOOOO, John isn’t being considered for Vice President?

Fresh off the best fundraising stretch of his presidential campaign, Mitt Romney plans to spend this weekend strategizing and fraternizing with his biggest bundlers at a posh resort in Park City, Utah.

The presumptive Republican nominee and his senior advisers and aides are hosting two days of policy sessions and campaign strategy discussions at the Deer Valley resort for more than 100 top fundraisers and their spouses. Those who raised more than $100,000 are expected to attend.

More than a dozen Republican heavy-hitters are scheduled to join the private retreat as special guests. According to a fundraiser who is attending, they include some GOP stars thought to be in contention to be Romney’s vice presidential running mate: Rep. Paul Ryan (Wis.), Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and Sen. John Thune (S.D.).

Don’t eat all the cocktail shrimp.

Arts economic impact on our community

I was going to post about this the other day, but I see Cory Madville has done a much better job.

I think this story coming out just days after I asked what the SF Arts Council does is ironically funny;

Culture means money.  That’s the message from a study released Tuesday by the Sioux Falls Arts Council.

The 2010 study found that non-profits and the arts generate more than $35 million in economic activity in Sioux Falls.  They also create 1,300 jobs and raise $1.4 million for local governments.

“They are investing in an industry that supports jobs, generates revenue and is a cornerstone of tourism. The report shows that the arts mean business,” Tim Hoheisel with the Sioux Falls Arts Council said.

The study was directed by Americans for the Arts. It shows that the tourism dollars generate more than $30 million of local income.

I guess we know one thing, the SF Arts Council has been successful at reading studies and forwarding that information to the media. YAY!

So what is the SF City Council’s opinion on the two-question rule?

That is a very good question. If you go to the video page, it is non-existant. I sent this email to councilors Staggers and Jamison last night;

I noticed on Tuesday that the informational meeting stopped it’s (internet) feed at about 15 minutes into the meeting, and I have noticed that it is not available on the city website.

I don’t contact the clerk’s office about this stuff anymore, because they just ignore me (gee I wonder why). But citizens pay dearly for this service, and it needs to start working. Enough of the glitches and excuses.

I often find it ironic these ‘glitches’ occur during controversial topics. I hope that this is not a coincidence.

Actually, I don’t think this is coincidence. I used to blame it on incompetence, but not anymore. Why?

• I have complained to the clerk’s office and city councilors about the video feed missing several times in the past.

• How can Channel 16 televise these meetings with no problem, but that same taped meeting cannot be streamed online immediately?

• How can a meeting be missing for several days or even weeks then suddenly show up? Where was the archive hiding?

• If the company we hired to handle the online videos, SIRE, is responsible for these problems, they either need to be fired or they need to give taxpayers a refund. They are not providing a service to us properly.

I thoroughly understand that issues can occur with the great internets. But the clerk’s office has had plenty of time to fix this issue with no avail. An assistant city clerk advised me once to watch the meeting on Channel 16. First off, I don’t have cable, and secondly that is not the solution. Citizens should be able to access these meetings anytime they want to. I also find it very strange these ‘glitches’ occur whenever there is a controversial topic.

I’m sure the meeting will ‘magically’ show up today after city employees have their morning reading of the DaCola, but it shouldn’t work this way. A blogger shouldn’t have to piss and moan about this week after week. We have $180 million for a new events center and hundreds of thousands of dollars for spray parks and monkey spas, we should have money allocated for transparency and public access to information.

Okay, we hired the plumber, but what about that pesky naming rights issue?

I’m still puzzled about all these press conferences about RFP’s and plumbers, yet no announcement on who’s name is going to be on the side of the building;

The site fence will go up July 24 and construction on the events center, which will eventually seat 12,000 people, will begin in August.

Midwestern Mechanical was recommended through what’s known as a best-value selection process for fire suppression services, including sprinkler systems. Tessier’s was recommended to do the HVAC and plumbing work.

The city will host another news conference today to identify the electrical contractor that will begin contract negotiations with Mortenson. Then, on Friday, a third news conference will be held to announce more key subcontractors.

“Yeah, and we hired Acme Brothers to deliver light bulbs to the construction site and ABC Pottie Pals to manage human waste from the construction workers.”

So when and if the naming rights deal is announced before ground breaking, will we get to the see the details of the negotiations? Will we get to see a list of competitors and their offers? I think hiring a construction risk manager was a fantastic idea to keep costs down. But will the public get the same deal with the naming rights? One wonders after you terminate your naming rights marketing evaluator half way through the process and hire a company that has a reputation to inflate ticket prices.
