An admission and apology from Poly

Poly wanted me to post this for his past comments about Hot Harley Nights;

A while back I posted a comment about Hot Harley Nights. I was wrong and I mean to tell you why. I had not been to an event in several years, so my wife and I decided to go and experience the event once again for ourselves. We know it’s been loud, and from previous ventures there, we were not much impressed by some of the behavior. We spent three hours there tonight. Absolutely nothing disorderly. Very impressed. Ran into an old work buddy and rider and his wife and we sat for a good time with them. They have attended every J&L event they have ever had. This is their 20th year. They informed me of these numbers. They donate every dime made from concessions to auctions to Make a Wish. That total before this year is 2.25 million dollars. They also informed me the average cost per child per wish is $7000. So that’s a lot  of wishes fulfilled. This year they hope to make over $175,000. So if some noise pollution is what it takes to do this….go for it. Again, I was wrong.

Are there other parks with ‘problems’ in Sioux Falls?

A South DaCola foot soldier recently told me that there have been problems with homelessness and vandalism at and near another park in town. I guess the neighborhood kids have been having a little fun wreaking havoc on Veteran’s Park including vandalism to the restrooms and damaging the trees (climbing them and breaking limbs) and nearby the Russell Avenue bridge over the river is a popular ‘camp site’ for the homeless.

Not sure if any of this is true, or partially true, but it seems these days our parks in Sioux Falls are becoming play grounds for mischief and crime.

Does Mayor Huether think he is a Saint now?

mayor-god

What God would look like if he got his hair cut every 5 1/2 days and had a business acumen.

He recently changed his BIO (where he still doesn’t admit to previously being the chief salesman for the worst predatory credit card in the nation) but the last line got me to thinking;

In his “spare” time, Mayor Mike enjoys tennis, running, working outdoors, is an avid hunter, and creates as many God-given memories in life as possible.

First off, like how he put parentheses around the word spare. But my bigger question is how do you ‘create’ God given memories if God is giving them to you? I’m no literature or grammar major, but someone seems to have a saint complex.

*Also, correct me if I am wrong, but it seems his daughter has changed positions at Sanford.

The History of Powderhouse Road (SF City Council Public Testimony, 7/7/2015)

What’s in a name? Why is a name important? We offer this impassioned testimony given to save a long cherished story of Sioux Falls South Dakota history.

1936 Powder House Blast – South Dakota Historical Markers on Waymarking.com http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM… tells a brief tale of the events. There is more but start with this;
“William Raymond Nesbit, a man who failed to choose his partners and their girlfriends wisely. After relieving a Sioux Falls, Iowa, jewelry store of $37,000 worth of baubles in 1936, Nesbit and gang hatched another scheme, one that involved the use of the explosive nitroglycerin. Still hanging around Sioux Falls, they drove five miles outside of town to obtain dynamite and gunpowder to make the nitro. In the process of purchasing the materials, an argument ensued among the thieves. They began brawling. The girlfriend of bandit Harold Baker decided to wade into the fury and try to stop the fight. Bad idea. Nesbit clubbed her on the skull with a hammer, and another gang member shot her. To cover their tracks, both Baker and the girl were dragged into the store’s powder house. One of the gang lit a fuse, and those who remained took off. Despite her severe injuries, the lady managed to crawl away before the sparks hit the powder. Her boyfriend wasn’t so lucky. In a classic case of literal overkill, 3,500 pounds of dynamite and 7,000 pounds of black gunpowder erupted, incinerating Harold Baker and shattering windows in Sioux Falls.

“It was not the most ingenious way for a gang of burglars to lay low after a successful robbery. Aside from alerting half the state, Nesbit and crew had also left a very angry, very determined witness. Baker’s girlfriend survived the hammering, the shooting, and the massive explosion, and helped the authorities identify the culprits.”

Our local historians tell a much more colorful version of the events, sit back and let them tell you a story you will not soon forget. Cameraman Bruce’s father and family lived 50 miles away, north of Vermillion, and they told versions of the story. It was a big deal and now our throwaway City administration is throwing out another piece of our history. As you enjoy MayorCam remember how little regard some people have for our local history. Throwing away Powderhouse Road is like throwing away the Wallace Dow buildings in Sioux Falls because they were old.

UPDATE: Bigger Ripples, dents, water damage and rust – the 1-year anniversary of the Events Center siding

Note: This video was shot on July 3, 2015.

UPDATE: Since posting this video, some of us have been curious. Does a mediation agreement between the city and Mortenson have to gain city council approval (council must vote on and approve the final legal agreement). It will be interesting to see how this is handled.

We get to take you on our recent tour of the Denny Sanford Premier Events Center today. We’ve heard the rumors once again about how the city legal beagles are coming to an agreement on how the crappy siding can be ignored. Most people don’t get a chance to look at building in an up close personal way based on many years of metal work experience. So we’re here to help.

It’s been four seasons of lies and hiding siding issues. We are now at the four season mark where the Mayor, Cotter, Fiddle Faddle and more promised to present an actual fix to the crappy siding on the Events Center.

Is the city planning a big announcement to tell us they plan to accept the bumpy, rusty siding that lets water into the wall cavity just because they can? When we have asked for answers, we’ve been lied to, jailed, kicked off the property and otherwise been treated wrong. What is the administration hiding in their siding decision?

How big will the press conference be announcing another special deal has been concluded? By the way, whatever happened to the mechanics lien filed against the Denny nonpayment of a bill?
