There was more stupidity occurring at the council meeting tonight. And guess what?! It’s happening again for the same reason; LACK OF TRANSPARENCY.
Just look at this stupid graph they have been man-splain’ to the council for over a year;

Notice, this is square footage of PUBLIC facilities. So what is the square footage of private facilities? As councilor Greg Neitzert said at a meeting last year; ‘There’s a gym on every corner of this town.’ I think he made it pretty clear when they first presented this stupid graph that there was NO comparison to the private sector, even after that warning over a year ago, they are still pitching this stupid argument. Sure, we may not have as much public fitness as other communities, but if you need to workout in Sioux Falls, you can find a gym and it is likely more affordable then the city.
I often tell councilors you need to support more outdoor / FREE recreation because it is something the private sector DOES not provide, and that is why we DON’T have much public indoor rec because we have an amazing city funded outdoor park system! How about we improve this? Or at least fix the broken equipment at Rotary Park!
Parks and Rec need to focus on what they do best, outdoor recreation and stop trying to act like they need to run a Gold’s Gym (I think they went bankrupt?)
Scott, what got me, was this, 5 of the 8 council members all had issues with the resolution to adopt the concept design, but yet 5 of them voted YES. This is nothing more than grandstanding the public. Curt is the only one who had any balls to say no and stand by his comments. Rich, Jennifer, both mentioned they hated the plan, but moved forward to vote yes. IF one would had watched this discussion, you assume this would have failed 5 to 3, but no, the corrupted council members all voted YES to approve.
As for your thought on outdoor family and youth recreation, it reminds me when I was pushing to save the Delbridge Museum, by creating a new concept – an Indoor and Outdoor natural wildlife museum, where families can spend the day with their children to explore and study the Taxidermy collection, while walking nature trails outside enjoying our awesome natural wildlife climate, alongside the birds, the breeze, the prairie grass, etc.
I have pushed for years to renovate the ARENA to become a Family and Youth Recreation Center, placing it under the Parks Department, something like Sioux City has done with its old Auditorium nextdoor to the Tyson Center. Everything they are wanting to do on the east side, could have been done at the Arena, creating an indoor playground, let alone recreating the upperdecks, while creating office space, convention space in the Arena.
SOmetimes the City Council is to confusing to understand, just how they think…
