So are the Uptown developers going to finally buy the Phillips to the Falls land?

If I was a guessing man, that’s what I would think?

A preview of “a significant announcement related to downtown development” anchored the city’s weekly Listening and Learning Session on Saturday at the Whisk and Chop Cafe.

The session was focused on economic growth. Community Development Director Darrin Smith said that within two weeks, officials expect to be able to disclose a development to go hand-in-hand with existing plans that “will make 2011 and 2012 exciting years for downtown.”

Because just tearing down a parking ramp and building another one isn’t really ‘DT Development’.

Two components of economic development downtown are expanding parking and completing an ambitious redevelopment of the river greenway to make the Big Sioux River a focus.

Afterward, Smith said the undisclosed development neither precludes nor enhances prospects of a downtown events center.

Are they finally gonna break ground on Uptown at the Falls? We’ll see.

How did Jenna Haggar pull it off?

With a little help from a friend, and few dirty tricks. As Cory from Madville points out, Christina Espenscheid learned her tricks from one of the best in the business.

But what Cory did not mention was that Jenna and Christina are practically attached at the hip. I met the two neo-cons at the same time at a political party. At first I thought they were twin sisters (fraternal, of course) because of their similiar talking points, it was almost like they briefed themselves to be on message about labor and abortion. In fact I remember getting into an argument with Christina about the minimum wage.

I still think the Vanderlinde campaign should have sent out this postcard.

I still think Jenna is an extremely bright person (not just a pretty face), and one to watch in Pierre this year. Jenna was brought up around politics and knows her issues, it’s just unfortunate she let one of her friends deceive voters to win her first election, but hey, it’s the only way the neo-cons can win.

The Hypocrisy and Irony of Darrin Smith, uh, I mean, Bob Litz

I think this says it all;

That gives the city council time to talk about appointing a new member. It’s a process Litz himself is already familiar with.

“Ironically when council member Litz was first appointed he went through that process himself a few years back,” Sioux Falls City Clerk Debra Owen said.

I think Bob realized he could make more money and work less as county auditor and used his name recognition to skate into the job. While I am happy to see the flip-flopper leave the city council, his title as auditor doesn’t exactly make me feel to good either. I also grow weary of politicians who are ‘quitter ladder climbers’. When something better comes along, they just quit and move along. While that is fine and dandy in the private sector, in the public sector you have made a commitment to the taxpayers to at least finish out your term. That is what has chapped my hide about the appointment of Darrin Smith to the Huether administration. Maybe they will let Bob work from home since there probably isn’t a parking space at the county administration big enough for his aircraft carrier of a truck he drives. Everytime I drive by him, I get the image of the BP oil well spurting oil into the Gulf.

What smoking ban?

The Argus Endorser just put out a story today about the virtual ‘non-compliance’ of the smoking ban. Which is no surprise. This state makes a habit of passing laws that they don’t bother enforcing or for that matter charging a proper fine for a violation.

What was not brought up in the article was that fact that Tim Kant’s establishments (STOGEEZ and EASTWALD Smoke Shop) and a Rapid City Cigar Bar are still allowed smoking as long as they follow three requirements;

1) Must have a humidor on site

2) Only can allow cigar smoke

3) 10% of the sales must be from cigars

Seems fair, right? Well the first one will be easy, but the last two will be virtually impossible to enforce. Why? Because the business is supposed to ‘self-audit’ themselves. LMAO!

You can’t tell me on a summer night when Stogeez patio is packed that for every $90 in beer he sells he is sell $10 in cigars. Yeah right.

Now the STATE can do a random audit of his place to make sure his books are in order but the chances of that happening are next to nil unless they see some blatant discrepencies in his returns. Seems NO RULES Kant got away with another one.
