Is Mayor Huether breaking open records laws by denying the public info on the Events Center

This morning I encouraged Mr. Hildebrand (Build it Downtown) to challenge mayor Huether on the issue, he sent him this email this afternoon;

Mayor Huether,

You are currently using $500,000 of public funds to study the location, feasibility and design of a future events center for Sioux Falls. Because of your use of public funds, the transparency and accessibility of information used to conduct these studies should be afforded to the public in a timely fashion.

SDCL 1-27 provides entitlement to information within government bodies, including the City of Sioux Falls. Specifically, under 1-27-1.3 the law is to be “liberally” construed “in order that the citizens of this state shall have the full right to know of and have full access of information on public finances of the government and the public bodies and entities created to serve them.”

Under SDCL 1-27-1.5 there are exceptions to the right to inspection and copying. Which exception are you relying on to prevent us from seeing the information we have requested?

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Steve Hildebrand, Co-Founder

Steve is not the only one who has been fishing for facts. Another resident has hinted to me that they will probably file a complaint with the open meetings commission. Seems Mike is about as transparent as a piece of coal.

Detroit Lewis makes a rare appearance at the city council meeting

Actually, believe it or not, I have not addressed the new council and mayor yet, and to tell you the truth, I didn’t think I would last night, but after hearing Mr. Stenga (another citizen) speak I felt compelled. But before I got up and spoke some interesting things happened.

I walked in as the meeting was just getting started, so I sat in the back row, where some old dude was standing taking pictures, I got a grin from Litz and Jamison and a worried look from Brown (as usual). Before public input, they do their normal dog and pony show where they hand out awards, magic 8-balls and candy.

One crystal statue went to Bob Litz, it was his last night on the council, then he got a standing ovation. I think besides the guy in the wheelchair, I was the only other person not standing and clapping. So while this is going on, I notice the old dude next to me is taking pictures like crazy, like his son was Bob Litz or something, so I looked at him closely, and he gave me this mean frown, in which I figured out who he was, and I just started chuckling to myself (and kinda laughing in his face). It was no other then my BFF, Joel Rosenthal (I think). He must have ran Litz’s county auditor campaign? Who knows, who cares. And people say I’m the grumpy angry one, you need to smile more Joel.

Anyhoo, enough ranting, I spoke about how the public has yet to vote on the Events Center (starts at 17:30) I would like to thank councilors Jamison and Erpenbach for their reassuring smiles during my rant. I appreciated it.

Oh, BTW, good luck Bob.

We should change the name of Pierre

Though voters have said TWICE that we are a pro-choice state, some legislators don’t get it. They continue to make it harder for women to have safe access to abortion;

A measure requiring women to consult with pregnancy help centers before getting abortions passed Tuesday in the South Dakota House despite arguments that it probably will be thrown out by courts after an expensive legal battle.

The bill says an abortion could not be performed until at least 72 hours after a woman first meets with a doctor who will perform the abortion.

That doctor would have to determine whether the woman is voluntarily seeking an abortion and whether she is at risk for developing psychiatric or physical problems if she has an abortion.

Before getting an abortion, a woman also would have to consult with a pregnancy help center to get information about services available to help her give birth and keep a child. The state would publish a list of pregnancy help centers that seek to persuade women not to have abortions.

The bill’s main sponsor, Rep. Roger Hunt, R-Brandon, said many women have made it clear that they did not get adequate counseling before getting abortions at South Dakota’s only abortion clinic, which is in Sioux Falls. Women have testified in court cases and in legislative hearings that they have been coerced into getting abortions by boyfriends, husbands and others, he said, but the abortion clinic does nothing to help them resist that pressure.

“This is a matter of life. This is a matter of taking life,” Hunt said. “This is about information and blocking coercion. These are all good and noble objectives.”

So what Roger is saying is women getting abortions are to ignorant to understand what they are getting themselves into, but he knows better. Yeah . . . Right.

The measure also would force women to submit to lectures by unqualified counselors or volunteers who argue against abortion because of religious beliefs, Gibson said.

“It substitutes what amounts to harassment, propaganda and coercion for unbiased counseling information,” Gibson said.

Councilors who just happen to be really good friends of Mr. Hunt. While I can understand the outrage by women when it comes to the privacy issues, I am more concerned about the business nepotism going on here. Why not just require a QUALIFIED councilor to be present at PP? And maybe I am off base, but I believe women are told about the procedure before getting it done. I don’t think it is any freaking mystery, abortion terminates a pregnancy. I think it’s time we ABORT some legislators in Pierre and vote them out of office next time around.

Ah, fiddlesticks, Thune Bag ain’t running

Like I have said in the past, I hoped and prayed Ironic Johnny would run, but I knew, it was all posturing just to get his name out there;

Sen. John Thune announced today that he will not run for president in 2012.

The two-term senator has spent months deliberating what he has described as a “gut-level” decision on his possible bid for the presidency.

In today’s statement, Thune said, “There is a battle to be waged over what kind of country we are going to leave our children and grandchildren and that battle is happening now in Washington, not two years from now. So at this time, I feel that I am best positioned to fight for America’s future here in the trenches of the United States Senate.”

Thune also added,

“We all know my pecker always points in the direction the wind is blowing, I mean, really, folks, unlike Dems, I try not to piss in the wind, but I never turn down a reach around.”
