Picking apart the mayor’s re-election announcement

cry-me-a-river

It’s hard to read this statement without finding a myth in every paragraph, like the image above (KELO-TV Screenshot) I was practically crying while reading it.

• Actually, the SFPD has had to fight for money every year since Huether has been mayor.

• Many contractors have complained about the stringent fire codes hurting development of more affordable housing.

• The city has used code enforcement to allow neighbors and the city to harass property owners, and they have learned nothing from the several Supreme Court cases they have lost on the constitutionality of SF code enforcement, they have only inflamed citizens and have been conterproductive.

• Record construction numbers have come from the $100 million dollars the taxpayers have borrowed to build the EC and luxury home construction. The little man is not benefitting from these numbers.

• Yes, sales tax revenue is up, so is our city debt, around $400 million dollars.

• The traffic light issue is new, and well overdue, it is just a campaign reaction to Huether’s opponent, Jamison, just like Huether using snowgates against Kermit in his first mayoral campaign.

• Snowgates will probably come to fruition, an idea that Staggers has been cheerleading for almost 8 years. This is a citizen driven proposal, and if they pass on the ballot, you can thank the citizens who vote for their implementation and Ms. Stehly.

• I WILL give Huether and the council credit for maintaining road construction. But they need to start focusing on our older secondary road in the core and infrastructure.

• Surpluses have grown, so why are we not using the money to pay down debt?

• I am still baffled about using a natural disaster cleanup as a campaign issue. FIRST off, the FEDS (FEMA) and the taxpayer’s of SF PAID for this cleanup, they deserve the most credit on the ice storm cleanup success. As someone said to me the other day, “How is doing your job as an elected official (Mayor) somehow turn into an accomplishment/success? A natural disaster occurred, Huether responded correctly and quickly. Thank you for doing your job.”

• Actually airfare has been going up and even when it was affordable, it had nothing to do with City Hall, but because of the hard work of the airport board.

• The RR relocation is still in limbo, and even if it was full-steam ahead (excuse the pun) it will have little to no affect on the lives of the average taxpayer/citizen in this city. It is a Federal handout to a lucky developer.

I need a tissue after that.

Awaiting an Important Press Release

While I cannot say much until I receive a final press release (hopefully I will have it sometime this afternoon) I was told last week that an important event will be taking place at Carnegie tomorrow.

Several citizen groups have gotten together and have a special announcement about an attempt at changing city ordinance to close a ‘loophole’ in state law.

I will keep you posted!

Is the city telling the truth about the cost of an indoor pool?

Makes you wonder a little bit?

Parks and Recreation Director Don Kearney said the type of outdoor pool the city can build is held back by the parameters of Save Spellerberg’s petition. At $7.5 million, a new outdoor pool there would be one of the city’s smallest, about 2 acres, and probably would not include certain amenities.

The indoor option would be about 3.2 acres and would have both a recreation area and a lap pool designed for competitions. That plan includes three diving boards in the lap pool. The indoor option also drew a number of questions from the council.

Several times I have heard Parks and Rec Director Kearney say that the indoor pool plan is ‘preliminary’. They claim the outdoor pool plans are ‘small’ because they are hamstrung by the petition’s $7.5 million dollar pricetag, but interestingly they are able to build a facility that is almost twice the size, with a roof, for $19.5 million. I don’t believe it for a second. The over $40 million dollar Pavilion that was only supposed to cost $21 million is proof the city isn’t really good at projections when it comes to these projects. Also, the therapy pool will have to be enclosed according to experts (it isn’t in the current proposal). So if the city is ‘educating’ us on an indoor pool, should they be accurate about the TRUE cost of the facility? I find it hard to believe that with the tiny outdoor facility they are proposing for $7.5 million that they can build such a large indoor facility for $19.5 million. So either one of two things are going on here. They will build the indoor facility for the proposed pricetag of $19.5 million and scale back the plans, or they will build what is proposed for a lot more. (remember, even if the outdoor pool fails on the ballot, the NEW city council will still have to approve a 2015 budget for the indoor pool and selling bonds).

Parks and Recreation officials plan to host public meetings about the two plans at each of the city’s community centers before the election, Kearney said, but the dates haven’t been set because the department has to write a program that doesn’t advocate for one plan over the other.

“We’re in the process of putting together an educational program,” Kearney said. “That will be reviewed by our legal team.”

These statements alone make me suspicious of the city’s ‘education’ intentions. Very suspicious.

Anne is not the only one ‘disgusted’ with the ‘crazies’

I’m surrounded by crazies! Get me out of here!

It’s about time a fellow legislator pointed out the pointless and harmful legislation being proposed in Pierre;

“The media picks up on these bills and people think about moving to South Dakota and they say, ‘Oh, crazies are out there,” Hajek said.

“I think there is legislation brought with the purpose of having a lot of discussion and having people spent a lot of time on it. It’s frivolous, but it will keep us from doing the work we’re supposed to be doing,” Hajek said.

I have often wondered where these clowns come from. I have been reading a book called ‘The Authoritarians’, (available online for free) which explains a lot about the Olsons, Wicks and Steele’s of the world.
