City of Sioux Falls to explore options to Paratransit

In the consent agenda today at the city council meeting they will be proposing testing an alternative to Paratransit for disabled riders;

Transportation Services for Persons with Disabilities

Community Coordinated Transportation Systems (River Cities Public Transit): $ 120,000

As I understand it they will be more like a taxi service for the disabled that are more ambulatory then those who normally ride paratransit, and will charge $5 a ride. It will be an experiment at this point. I expect a more detailedÂ explanation tonight at the council meeting.

FREE CONDOMS!

Like a texting or cell phone ban in cars, education goes farther then laws. For years I have advocated that one of the quickest ways to reduce abortions, unwanted pregnancies and STD’s would be to have FREE condoms to anyone that wanted them. With all the money we spend (taxes) on free STD testing and welfare, medicade and SNAP for unwanted children, why not spend the money up front for prevention and education? Our rising number of STD cases in South Dakota is NO accident, it is the result of a passive society when it comes to sex.

And when I say FREE condoms, I mean EVERYWHERE. Not just at the clinic or schools, but at bus stops, grocery stores, heck even churches! Our infatuation with sex being a dirty thing has only made more people sick and dying from sexual diseases. I don’t think FREE condoms are any different then clean drinking water.

FREE condoms won’t promote more sexual relations, it will however promote safe sex if you choose to have a sexual relation and I believe would save taxpayers billions.

Christine Erickson Rex Rolfing

Should councilor Erickson be appointed the next council vice-chair?

The Sioux FallsÂ city council has their leadership election on Tuesday (Items 25-27) at the regular council meeting. Outgoing council chair Dean Karsky will most likely be replaced by current vice-chair Kenny Anderson Jr., but the new vice-chair is up for grabs. The word is Rolfing is pursuing the position, since he has been on the council longer then Erickson. But for a multitude of reasons, I would prefer to see Erickson as vice-chair. I think she would bring more to the plate in the weekly leadership meetings with the mayor then rubber stamper Rolfing would.

I encourage all the councilors to nominate and vote for Erickson as vice-chair. We don’t need a wanna-be comedian as vice-chair who spends half his time in Florida, we need a lawmaker.

You’re kidding? Right? Events Center engineering wins an award?

With a pending lawsuit and a lien against the city for the botched siding job, cracked terrazzo floors and their ADA compliance into question they win an engineering award? WTF?

The South Dakota Engineering Society recently awarded the events center project its 2014 Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award, acknowledging the accomplishments of the engineering profession in South Dakota. The South Dakota Engineering Society each year recognizes engineering achievements that capture the innovative and dynamic spirit of a profession “dedicated to public service,” according to a news release.

The award nominees are judged on application of engineering principles, originality and innovation, complexity, social significance and economic impact.

Economic impact!? You mean the $10 million dollar mortgage we are stuck with from the CIP every year while SMG and other contractors cash in? This award must be some kind of sick joke.
