What’s up with the unification of Sioux Falls Swim Teams?

Last week there was an announcement that the two opposing swim teams would unify. Which I think is a great idea, but it also brings suspect.

The new aquatic center is set to open this Fall and there have been several discussions with the parks board, the city council and parks department staff on what rates would be charged. Did the swim teams think it would just be easier to schedule time and tournaments if they joined forces? And if so, how will this affect open swimmers?

I guess we will see.

A supporter of an outdoor pool at Spellerberg wrote and informative letter (to the Argus Leader) about the donations to SWIM 365 (Supporters of an indoor pool at Spellerberg);

All one has to do is review the list of wealthy, elite donors and developers who raised more than $125,000 in election support for their swim team children, none of whom are on free and reduced lunches in the school system. Certainly that money would have been better spent on purchasing an appropriate location.

I saw all kinds of problems with the location and project;

• No room for expansion

• No public vote of approval

• An outstanding quit claim deed

• An offer from Sanford to build a competitive pool at Sports Complex (they still may do that, in competition with a public facility).

• Spending re-paid infrastructure loans (the levees) on an entertainment facility

• The questionable millions in subsidies to the pool (will user fees cover it?)

And now we have two swim teams acting as a super power to attain pool time in the new center.

This project was built on a systematic, well orchestrated campaign of lies. We will see how that foundation holds up.

Touchmark to gift trees to All Saints Neighborhood

Funny, after all of the crying about ‘destroying a neighborhood’ by cutting down a couple of trees, it seems the neighborhood may have a change of heart;

When Touchmark removed dozens of mature trees, angered neighbors said they felt misled about the number of trees that would be spared.

Last week, Touchmark agreed to donate $3,750 to help the All Saints Neighborhood Association plant up to 100 trees in the neighborhood.

“Neighbors aren’t always going to agree on issues. What’s important is that something positive has come about because of the issue itself,” said Katrina Lehr-McKinney, the association’s president. “Touchmark, in our neighborhood, has found another way to work together to make something positive happen.”

I have said from the beginning a couple of things,

  • Touchmark owns the property, they should be able to build what they want to within limitations.
  • The grove of trees next to the retirement center was actually pretty creepy (I nicknamed it Gorky Park), and anything there would be an improvement (in fact I have been enjoying the construction project because you can see the old building now that the trees are removed).
  • I have felt this was never about the trees but the industrial hospital complexes fighting Touchmark providing therapy and care to their clients on campus, and some neighbors in the hood were manipulated to fight it under the guise of ‘trees’ and ‘historical preservation’.
  • Now we find out, they will add even more trees to the hood (though I am opposed to planting in the boulevard.)

See, a happy ending after all. I wonder if the new therapy center will be providing Chinese massages? But don’t complain about that to the city council, or they will call you a racist.

UPDATE: Bill Clinton visit

Update (11:24): Bruce is telling me there is about 500 people there (I think the District can hold around 1,500). Kind of bad planning on the Clinton organizers. Of course holding a rally at 9:30 AM on a Friday in a working class state like South Dakota wasn’t the brightest move.

One corporatist leader to introduce another (Huether), go figure. Should have seen this coming a mile away.

Cameraman Bruce will be covering the event for South DaCola this morning at the District.

The line around the District. Brady Mallory is on it.

The countdown starts

Sanders, now Clinton give Bruce credentials, our local mayor? Still in a state of denial.

City pays $67,000 for website consultant

siouxfallswebsite

Do you think that was too much, or really unneeded? What are your thoughts?

The City’s website receives 100,000 to 125,000 visits per month. Analytics show about 51 percent of the visitors to www.siouxfalls.org are using mobile devices and tablets. This is up from 35 percent in 2013. More and more users are coming to the site to pay bills, find a job, or use one of many interactive maps.

While I feel the mobile device upgrades needed to be made, I question when we have so many people working in the IT department already they couldn’t figure out how to re-format the site. Of course this is the same department that says SIRE isn’t broke, yet has been for several years without a fix.
