I will agree with Taneeza on one level, there was poor planning of speakers for a $100 ticketed event. The speakers should have been more diverse, not just on gender but on culture. The problem is that the SDDP is become more and more RIGHT every day, and one of the reasons I may never return to the party in South Dakota.

9 Thoughts on “Islam basically calls the McGovern Day Dinner a ‘Sausage Fest’

The lack of inclusivity, the cost, and who will be the speaker debacle are the reasons why I didn’t attend the McGovern Day Dinner this year. And now I hear, they want to hold it in Pierre next year…. Well, that should help the numbers, huh? (Unless they get Biden next year or whoever the apparent nominee is… 🙂 )

But let me pose this question: If Daschle can successfully drag Doris Kearns Goodwin out here for Daschle Dialogues just a couple of weeks ago, then why can’t connected Democrats drag someone out here of Goodwins caliber for McGovern Days this year, too?

Don’t get me wrong, the two Democrats that spoke are good Democrats and hardworking ones at that, so nothing against them personally, but really folks, what’s up? Last year we had Buttigieg. In 2010, we had Klobuchar. Didn’t we have Tim Ryan a couple of years ago, too (One of the current 20 Dems running for Prez.)? In fact, in ’58, we had JFK, but this year, we don’t even have speakers until Thursday….(“And I’ll gladly pay you on Tuesday”…)

I know they tried and invited all of the Democratic presidential candidates to no avail hoping one would show. But did they offer them a package deal including a press conference with local press that would be broadcasted across all of northwest Iowa?… You know Iowa, they have this once every four year thing called the, “Iowa caucuses”…..#LarchwoodIsWatching….

The McGovern Day speaker debacle or crisis is a sad reality. First, we stopped electing statewide candidates and now McGovern Day appears to be in jeopardy….#WhatWillBeLeft?(For the left?)

  2. The question i have is why does Tim Johnson have $500k in his warchest?

  3. Not much you can do when you spend weeks trying get people to come speak but nobody will, this includes many wonderful women running for President. As a state we get what we deserve.

I believe that warchest started at $800,000 after he left office. Its gradually being used to support candidates and DNC training sessions in South Dakota.

I really don’t have a problem with or how it is being used unless someone is suggesting that we should somehow legally blow it all on some single statewide candidate, which I don’t think would be a real good idea.

Recall Taneeza Islam called the entire legislature a hate group so at least she knows that much. Janklow had nearly a million in his war chest, Scott and why Johnson would blow his meager wad on speakers instead of on candidates is simply a ridiculous notion.

  6. Not my point. He should spend some of that moldy money on trying to register more dems.

  7. He has used some of the war chest for voter registration but also looking at it from a strategic point voter registration in SD is like doing the SDGOPs job for them.

Oh, but not if we plan our VR with some good old fashion “Strategery.”
