The Hypocrisy of the SD GOP

Who is the real phony running for governor?

When are South Dakotans going to freaking wakeup and realize the SD GOP are the real ‘Phonies’. As reported widely by many SD news organizations, the SD GOP’s Lucas Leach decided to attack Scott Heidepreim for being a phony because he drives a nice car or something like that. The hypocrisy couldn’t be more obvious. First they attacked Scott for switching parties, living in a mansion and the car he drives. I wonder if they know they have someone in their party that fits that description and he is running for governor, Dave Knudson. To be honest I don’t care about any of this stuff and I don’t support any of the candidates running in either party but I just wanted to point out the hypocrisy.

– Dave switched from Democrat to Republican (I am assuming once he started making the big bucks).

– Dave drives a very nice SUV, not sure what kind it is, but when I saw him in it, I recall it was either a Cadillac Escalade or a Mercedes SUV, not sure, but it was very nice.

– As reported by the Argus Leader last year, Dave lives in a home worth over $600,000, hardly a bungalow.

– He held a $1,000 a plate BBQ fundraiser, doubt many ‘regular folks’ were in attendance.

I’m glad no one from the SD Democratic Party decided to report this stuff, why lower themselves to the ratfink level of the SD GOP. I hope they resist the urge to be no good muckrakers. But I’m not below it.

Beer: is there anything it can’t do?

President Obama, Dr. Henry Gates, and Sgt. James Crowley of the Caimbridge police will meet over a beer  (link opens new window) on Thursday, presumably to talk race relations.

After the whole flap about Gates’ arrest and Obama’s comment afterwards, the president has taken a completely different tack than right-wingnut pundits expected. He invited his friend and the officer who arrested them over for a beer. While I preemptively agree with the president’s detractors that this is a PR move, you have to admit it’s a brilliant one. It wasn’t a statement issued and read at a press conference, not a half-assed apology, just a simple meeting over mankind’s favorite beverage.

Now, I wonder if an invitation to have a beer would get me out of my next speeding ticket…

“Look mom, I’m standing in a cornfield, does that makes me a man of the people?” – Lucas Leach, head of some SD political group

Trust me, I am not a fan of Scott Heid-a-casinolegislation for the Democratic candidate for governor, but I will say he is probably the only one in the party that has enough clout to raise money. I am still personally holding out for Chris Nelson to run as an independent.

But, I will have to admit, the SD GOP’s response to Scott running is laughable at best;

“This is somebody who used to be Republican, or at least we thought he was, and then he switched and became a Democrat and you know the reality is these are great questions for him. Why does he think he can play for one team, switch to the other,” South Dakota Republican Party Executive Director Lucas Lentsch said.

Really? Lucas Leach? That’s the best you can come up with? Maybe you should ask Republican candidate Knudson the same question? Why did he switch parties once he became rich . . . hmmm.

The Republicans also said that Heidepriem has cancelled his country club membership, sold his BMW, and is selling his house to try and look like a man of the people. But the Republicans would not provide KELOLAND News with any documentation to back-up those claims, and Heidepriem denies those claims.

Sell his BMW! Say it ain’t so! Like when Republican Kirby put his classic Porsche speedster in storage when he ran for governor? I would never give up my German automobile! Sell his house? Good luck with that, the only thing that place would be good for is a hotel or an orphanage. As for quitting the country clubs, good for him, those places suck anyway. But I hope he keeps his (fake) Italian loafers and man purse.

Scott did have one thing to say that I liked;

“I think its time that we did some things differently in this state. I think it’s time we stopped giving personal contracts to cronies in state government without even opening it up to the bidding process. It’s time to change the way we do business in this state,” Heidepriem said.

I think that is a good start, but will you stop writing legislation that benefits your clients from now on?

There is going to be a lot of broken glass in 2010 to clean up.
