Sioux Falls River Summit?

A 4-hour summit with Mayor Huether as the moderator, Chinese water torture or needles under my toenails? Hard decision.

SIOUX FALLS, SD –

On Monday, September 9, Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether will host the first “Mayor’s Big Sioux River Water Summit.” The summit allows the public to become more knowledgeable about the Big Sioux River, a critical natural resource.

Multiple presentations are scheduled including:

  • Water Quality
  • Water Resource and Conservation
  • Urban, Rural and Government Watershed Partnerships
  • Flood Control – FEMA
  • Fisheries and Recreation

A Q and A session with watershed professionals and stakeholders to listen to the publics concerns will be moderated by Gov. Huether.

The event takes place from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Orpheum Theater in Sioux Falls.

And you think the EC is gonna cost us? (H/T-FF)

There isn’t a property tax increase that Brandon (Weirdsville) doesn’t love. About $400 a year increase to build a Softball field. What a genius idea 🙁 What’s next, a wheel tax increase to help fund Automania?

I honestly don’t know if our property taxes are high or not compared to other locations, I just haven’t worried about it.  However, this week the Brandon City Council is outlining a bond proposal that will be voted on in October.  The issue?  To me, the issue is little town envy of our big cousin to the west. We have one stinkin’ hotel.  We have no good restaurants.  It’s not like Brandon is a tourist Mecca.  However, the brilliant powers that be have decided that Brandon needs to compete with Sioux Falls and other surrounding cities for the softball tournaments that bring in outside folks.

We already have a nice large park with multiple softball fields in the complex.  However, the “softball lobby” in Brandon is pushing for a massive upgrade.  How massive?  A $14 million renovation, to be mostly funded by a proposed bond measure.  The measure would call for $12.5 million to be raised, paid for over 10 years by a $3 per $1,000 house valuation increase on property taxes.

Giligan & the Skipper single-handily save Downtown

Well if you went to the AL site today and watched the video of Smith and Kant you would think they were the saviors of DT. Remember, Darrin Smith resigned as a councilor before finishing his term, something about having a hurt butt over getting his hurt butt handed to him in the mayoral election, or was it about a job? Can’t remember. This is also the same guy that asked his co-workers in a meeting (right after he started in the development office) “Where do people eat Downtown anyway?”

Yes, Darrin was part of the team that hid up in a 2nd story window DT and watched those crazy loopers from a distance (can’t get too close to those kids, they might make you drink some of there Mt. Dew and SoCo) and proposed all kinds of crazy rules while on the council, including baricading certain streets between 1 AM and 5 AM, nevermind if there is an emergency.

Then there’s Mr. Change the smoking rules for me Tim Kant. He says in the interview that all the loopers did was ‘Scream and Yell.’ Yeah, because when you walk past Stogeez on Friday and Saturday night you never hear anybody loud (the city actually had to change decibel levels DT because of the Stogeez patio).

While Giligan & the Skipper would love to take credit for DT, everyone knows it was the hard and diligent work of Carol Pogones that made DT into what it is today. If anything, DT would be better off without Stogeez, or Darrin Smith.

UPDATE: SF Planning official to be on ‘100 Eyes’ today

Jodi Schwan hosts today’s ‘100 Eyes,’ which takes a look at development in Sioux Falls’ southwest corridor.

Bring your questions for Jeff Schmitt, chief planning and zoning official for the city of Sioux Falls, at 3 p.m., and watch at ArgusLeader.com/100Eyes.

While the topic is about SW development, this would be a great opportunity to question Jeff about the SE development.

UPDATE: As I watched the show, this comment stood out;

Not sure if this was cynical, or truthful. But first of all, CITIZENS own the government, not Walmart or businesses. As for the ‘friendliness’ question, government should always be a friend of who funds them, and in SD that is citizens, since business does not pay any income taxes.

Harm? Don’t make me crap my pants laughing.
