2018

Still waiting for the year end financial report

Funny how the city couldn’t wait to release building permit numbers from 2017, but have been unusually silent on sales tax revenue collections. Oh that’s right, because you can’t collect taxes from city entities like counting public buildings to boost your numbers in building permits. My Bad.

But if you look at the through November numbers, we didn’t have a very stellar year;

Overall first two pennies were +1.8%, 3rd penny entertainment was at +2.2%, but you would think with all the sold out concerts at the Denty and conventions and events (like the soccer tournament) lodging would be up, it has been down -.08 from last year.

Besides the economy generally sucking in Sioux Falls and low wages, most of population growth over the past couple of years in SF has been from babymaking. Babies don’t work, and in a low wage economy like ours, more than likely a large percentage of them are ‘living off the system’. Also take into account that the Denty is a money vacuum that just sucks money out of our economy. Garth Brooks and Foo Fighters alone took $8 million within a couple of weeks.

No matter who the next mayor is, they will have no choice but to be frugal and prudent, the money isn’t coming in, and the credit card is maxed out.

Handy Guide to contacting your state legislator

From Bread for the World;

The State Legislature just began. You can make a difference by using your voice. Get ready now, because things move fast. They have 38 days left, counting today.

1.  Know your district number and your state senator and 2 state representatives. You can contact any legislators, but you will have the most influence with the ones from your district.
If you don’t find them here, call your county auditor or let me know:

If the district number does not show up, remembering their names, go back and put in only your city.

2. How to contact them
• Write to them at Sen.__ or Rep.__, State Capitol, Pierre SD 57501
• Email using this format: firstname.lastname@sdlegislature.gov
• Phone:  Leave short messages 605-773-3821 for Senators, 605-773-3851 for Representatives
• Talk with them in person. Catch them at the end of their public meetings. Or, arrange with them via email during the week for a meeting time the next time they are back in their districts. Or, go to Pierre.

Keep this info handy, and be ready to make contacts. Things move fast.
Thanks for being a voice for people in need.

RIBFEST calls it quits, are other festivals next?

Looks like $10 for 3 bones festival is over;

“The entertainment landscape has continued to expand over recent years with the opening of Denny Sanford PREMIER Center, The District and soon to be Levitt Shell,” Torkildson said. “SMG is refocusing its resources and efforts to managing and producing events in the venues it manages in Sioux Falls.”

I find it interesting that they would cancel this event right after getting a new contract to help manage Canaries Stadium. Makes you wonder what revenues are really like for SMG in Sioux Falls, or what they are seeing for projections.

I have been hearing rumors over the past couple of months that both CityFest (used to be LifeLight) and JazzFest may be on the chopping blocks also. I haven’t had anyone confirm that yet with me, but I do know that LifeLight as an organization has been liquidating some assets and Rob Joyce is retiring from the Jazz and Blues Society.

While I could give two-sh*ts about Ribfest or LifeLight, killing JazzFest would be very detrimental to summer entertainment. Even if they have to just scale back for a couple of years to one day, I think that would be better than trying to bring it back later. Obviously there is going to be a shift to have more outdoor festivals downtown at the Levitt, which is awesome, but Yankton Trails was a perfect venue for JazzFest. I was told at one time that JazzFest attendees are around 40% out of town (not sure what last year’s numbers were) but many stay for the entire event at local hotels and campgrounds. The economic impact of JF is pretty big when you consider all the city has to do is provide a city park for about a week they we already pay to maintain anyway.

Let’s hope for the best!
