The SD Dem Party will meet for its state convention in July. I have been asking who they will run as constitutional officers, especially for AG and SOS. One candidate that may run against Chris Nelson for PUC is Minnehaha County Commissioner, Jeff Barth who will end his term on the commission in 2023.

I hope the Dems can find people to run for all the constitutional slots.

7 Thoughts on “Jeff Barth is considering running for PUC

When was the last time a non-Republican has served on the PUC?

Commissioner Barth should run for PUC. He would be great on the PUC!

A Dem won the PUC in 2006, then later resigned to work in the industry that he once regulated, I believe. That’s the last time a Dem has won such a spot.

The Dems used to dominate the PUC, or were at least players in it. When the Dems lost that ability, it was the canary in the coal mine to what was to happen.

The anti-Roe decision should help Dems nationally, but only in Purple states. This fall will be brutal for Dems in states like South Dakota. It will make 1994 and 2010 look like picnics.

I’ve heard some Dems think we are going to pick-up six legislative seats this fall due to redistricting. Right now, Dems have 11 seats in Pierre. After this fall’s election, I think there will be between 8 to 13 Dems in Pierre. I am not as confident about 15 and 10 as other Dems are. Some think 12 is in play, but 12 was for the most part revenue neutral for Dems after Redistricting. Some keep talking about 12 gaining a blue and a purple precinct, but they never mention how a blue precinct was also lost to 11. There are now more Republicans in 15 than Dems, but the Independent factor there is big, but I think in South Dakota gas prices, baby formula, (A Tampon shortage?), overall inflation, and the mood of the country will not bode well for Dems here.

But what do I know, I am usually the pessimist who is usually right. I predicted a gain of two legislative seats in Minnehaha in ’18 for Dems and I was right, a loss of two in ’20 for Dems while fellow Dems thought we would gain five to six. Oh, I told people back in the fall of ’15 that Trump would be our next president and didn’t I predict that our Mayor would get 73%? #ALittleTooHubris 😉

( and Woodstock adds: “More Republicans than Democrats in 15?”… “Next you are going to try to tell me that there are more Arabs than Jews in Israel”…. “Say, VSG, do you remember the time when you claimed that fanny packets would make a comeback, too?”…. )

i think steve kolbeck. and he’s running as a republican for the state senate now.

  4. Running as a Republican now? But that still makes him qualified to be a future Democratic Lt. Governor nominee, right?

Republicans have become paranoid and they pay homage to an orange god, while Democrats don’t want to offend anyone, and thus, obsess on pronouns. #WeAreLiterallyScrewed

I went to Taco Bell recently and they were out of Mexican Pizzas. Add that to the tampon list.
