If this Russian crackpot professor’s prediction comes true we will be Canadians soon.

For a decade, Russian academic Igor Panarin has been predicting the U.S. will fall apart in 2010. For most of that time, he admits, few took his argument — that an economic and moral collapse will trigger a civil war and the eventual breakup of the U.S. — very seriously. Now he’s found an eager audience: Russian state media.

We don’t need to change Washington, we need to change countries! But damn, do I hate maple syrup.

Yeesh. I don’t know which one I’d rather live in. All the little cultural quirks of the different regions would be hugely magnafied. The midwest would be a cheap, but pretty repressed place to live. The South would be the Bible Belt times ten, California would be the same mess as today, and Atlantic America would be the same noisy, crowded place it is today only more expensive, due to having to import nearly all of its food.
This guy shows that he knows nothing about the country he’s been studying for decades. We aren’t Europe (particularly the former USSR or the Balkans). The culture in Colorado isn’t as foreign to a New Yorker as the culture in Latvia is to a Tajiki. We share the same language and culture throughout the country. We have no reason to break apart.

  2. I agree. The funny part about his prediction is the ‘Civil War’. Yeah right. Americans are too fat and lazy to wage something like that.

If they could fight the war on TV or the internets . . . maybe.

    I smell a reality show.

Hey, we’ve warred civally before. There are plenty of people stocking up on guns and ammo for just such an occaision. I just don’t see what we’d fight about. Sure there’s the whole red state vs. blue state thing, but a very shallow look into that reveals that no state is anywhere near being pure red or blue.
The KGB should have dumped this whackjob a long time ago. It’s pretty clear that all he can do is come up with wild-ass theories that the Kremlin really wants to believe.

  4. “There are plenty of people stocking up on guns and ammo for just such an occaision.”

but don’t have the balls to use them. Americans are really chickenshits when you think about it.

It’s called “smart”, not chickenshit. When it comes down to it, the government has more armed people than any of these people has bullets. These suvivalist weirdos may be crazy, but most have a few brain cells too. A civil war like this russian dude says will happen would pretty much negate the feds’ advantage.
However, these predictions come from a member of the same organization that predicted a US attack into eastern europe based on the evidence of increased red meat production in the west. It wasn’t until the 80’s that our intelligence services really found out what a paranoid bunch of conspiracy theorists the KGB was and exploited it.

  6. True.

As Hunter S. Thompson said before Y2K.

“Not sure why people are stocking up on food, they should be stocking up on guns. Because the people with the guns will have the food.”
