14 Thoughts on “It was nice to have high school journalist students do the post game of the governor’s debate

I thought Jamie did well. He looked good and came across good. His folksy one on one abilities came across really well. While Noem at times looked upset, bored, and frustrated. Plus, she appeared to be marginalized as the apparent front runner/incumbent by sitting to the side, where Jamie had the greater stage presence and the podium hid his waist (Sorry, 😉 ). I also came away liking the Libertarian candidate who seemed sincere, honest, and committed, and unlike many Libertarian candidates, who often come across wooden and self-righteous, she did not. Although, she does need to work on word economy or succinctness.

I also got a kick out of how Noem tried to blame all of her ethical problems on the character of a former impeached AG, which is like saying a hooker can’t be a witness to a crime. A defense attorney will always try to try or indict a damaging witness to the defense, but facts are facts and they can be stubborn things at times.

And what is this about BLM means violence? That’s like saying that all Republicans are to blame for January 6th.

All in all, Jamie did well. I wonder how many people saw this though? Is he campaigning in the roughly 16 counties that matter and 18 hours a day? Kneip won in ’70 against an incumbent without any paid staffers, but those were different times with less polarization.

As far as the youthful commentators, well, the days of a veteran Steve Hemmingsen being around are gone I’m afraid. We are left with good intended young people who lack the historic memory for gainful and serious discussion. #GodSaveOurDemocracy!

( and Woodstock adds: “I came away from the debate thinking that Noem wants a 10 year old rape victim to carry a pregnancy to term, while she isn’t bothered if a unmasked individual ends up killing a vulnerable person with Covid”…. “That’s what I took from this debate”…. “Apparently in Noem’s world it’s a draw…. You gain one and you lose one”…. )

Jamie looked like the commanding auctioneer, while Noem and the Libertarian looked like the helpers who hold up the antiques for auction. That’s it, Noem should have been one of those girls who works on ‘The Price Is Right’…. Well, maybe when she was younger….

Jamie and Noem also reminded me of the old ‘Tea Time Movie’ skit. Except this time, there was only one big boob and I think you know who I’m talking about.

(…. “How do you get to Tea Time Movies, you ask…. Well, first you need to take the Lassen cut-off, then you cut-off your Lassen”… 😉 )

The HS Civics teacher in the center brought in from Minnesota or Iowa to facilitate the panel discussion?

All the Civics teachers in South Dakota were coaching football games.

“We are left with good intended young people who lack the historic memory for gainful and serious discussion.”

The institutional knowledge which has been lost from the ranks of the legacy media outlets in South Dakota simply cannot be replaced.

The “news director” of the now-second largest newspaper in the state likely holds among his colleagues the greatest depth of institutional knowledge – that of the history (and menus) of restaurants and food trucks in the city of Sioux Falls.

  12. No civics in our schools. New and questionable social studies standards in our schools as well. Professors are being controlled. No public input. Republicans seldom debate any more. Elections are held where the victors get like 85 to 73% of the vote. AND, our local school board never held an election. Plus, now parts of the state constitution are ruled unconstitutional by other parts…. I see where this is all going…. And to think I was all worried about the commie under my bed all of this time….

Also, I and some fellow classmates were once taught the history and the art of civil disobedience by an assistant wrestling coach at the old WSHS. I wonder if that course could still be taught today, or would Noem equate should class instruction and discussion as a precursor to rock throwing? #FullNelson #HalfNelson #HalfOffHerRocker

Not all of us civics teachers were coaching football Friday night.

I do question the decision to host the debate on a Friday night in SD, however. Wonder if that was Noem’s idea?
