Big Cheese. Delicious, but spendy (for North Cliff)

Before I began this review, I will give full disclosure. I helped come up with the name of Big Cheese, and helped with some other concept ideas and actually designed the original logo (which is not being used – can’t win them all, I guess).

Anyway, I got a coupon in the mail the other day for delivery, so I thought I would give them a shot. Shortly after they first opened, I went into the place and got a gyro sandwich, and it was really good, but I’m not into the whole trendy sports bar thingy, so I couldn’t see myself hanging out there, that and it is in a very strange location (Cliff and Benson). I will give them credit, nothing like that exists out there, and ever since the Sidewinder closed, I don’t venture that way very often.

I chose the Magic Mushrooms for an app ($9.99)

Fresh mushroom caps stuffed with our signature handmade sausage, cream cheese, and a touch of fresh herbs topped with melted parmesan.

I have had stuffed mushrooms before, and have always liked them, but these had a great twist, they were mostly stuffed with spicy sausage, and damn tasty. But you gotta eat them hot. They were still hot when I got them, but starting to cool quickly. Best if ate in the restaurant.

My pizza was the best part of my delivery though. Pork Belly Passion (17.99)

99 Chunks of tender braised pork belly, red onions, sliced Canadian bacon smothered in BBQ sauce and our signature freshly grated mozzarella cheese

Sorry, but the description is not correct. There was maybe 12 large chunks of pork belly. Not sure where this ’99’ number came from? But the flavor was rich and smokey. I have always been a fan of BBQ sauce on pizza and pork toppings.

Big Cheese is damn tasty, but a little spendy for my taste. My bill was $30 before my $4 coupon. That is a gob of moolah for a pizza and an app. I guess if you are into sports bars and paying too much for a pizza pie, Big Cheese is for you. If you are a cheap ass . . . well you have your options.

Another Argue Endorser reporter gets into bloggin’ – I guess they don’t want to be ‘influential’ anymore

Megan ‘Patron’ Luther gives her best shot (w/o salt and a lime). I guess graphics on their blogs would just complicate things. I did however like this post.

Who got one of the lowest scores? (not the place I worked, THANK GAWD!) But Spezia. Funny how one of the most expensive restaurants in town has one of the worst scores. Talk about being overcharged for what you get! It’s kinda like paying for Charmin and getting a corncob. These critical violations kind of made me cringe a bit;

5 points: COOLING OF POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS FOOD
The methods used for cooling were not adequate.
4 points: SANITIZATION OF EQUIP. AND UTENSILS
The temperature of the rinse cycle of the heat sanitizing dish machine noted not adequate to achieve final sanitization.
3 points: CONTAMINATION BY EMPLOYEES
Bare hand contact with ready to eat food noted not being avoided with salad cooks
To be honest with you, I haven’t ate at the place since it left the WR Restaurant family (Minervas) and I probably won’t be checking it out anytime soon. If you do, I would avoid ordering chicken or salads.

Real Classy South Dakota

Okay, so the state department of revenue just chooses to ignore a state law for decades (instead of just telling the legislature to fix it) Then all of sudden decides they must enforce it? Then says if you want to skirt the law, you can go thru a complicated application process for something you may do a couple of times a year? Then, the kicker, since they can’t tax people who receive free food (from food banks and churches) they have to tax the food these orgs are giving away? WOW! Talk about having to pay extra for a undercooked shit sandwich;

About 275 organizations statewide that give away food to needy people might be forced to pay a long-unenforced sales tax, prompting some to worry the agencies simply will stop providing food to the poor.

At issue is a handling fee that agencies pay to the organization that supplies them with food.

A state law outlining the taxes has been on the books for decades. But it wasn’t until late last year that an audit discovered the maintenance fees existed and needed to be taxed, said Jan Talley, director of the state’s Business Tax Division.

“We are charged with enforcing the statutes of South Dakota,” she said.

Your charged with enforcing a law that you haven’t enforced for decades? So instead of just getting the powers of be to fix it, you have to be the assmunch instead and enforce it? Seriously?! Pierre is freaking broken, and this is further proof.

But the best part is the Argue Endorser’s online poll today;

I would like to meet these clowns that think it is okay to tax orgs that give food to the needy. I have a sandwich I would like to feed them. And it’s not made of turds.

Are obesity rates high in SD because we eat cheap crap? Yup.

Hey, it has pickles, tomatoes and onions on it? Aren’t those veggies good for you?

(H/T – CM) The Consumerist hits the nail on the head;

While healthy eating may save you money in the long run on health care costs and extra-large sweatpants expenses, meeting the federal government’s new nutritional guidelines would require the average American family to spend more on food. In theory, it’s possible to eat nutritiously for cheap, but that’s not how things are playing out in real Americans’ diets. Studying adults in Washington state, researchers found that consuming the government’s recommended amount of just one nutrient—potassium—cost consumers an extra $380 per person, or $1520 per year for a family of four.

Can you say Dollar Menu? I’m loving it!
