Walmart resistance

(Photo: peopleofwalmart.com)

I just finished watching the recent Sioux Falls Planning Commission meeting (FF to Item #15) in which they approved the Walmart construction project (it still needs to go to the council). The commission approved the project 4-2. Several people in the neighborhood of the proposed site, including representatives from SF Christian school, came to protest at the meeting. They made some good points;

• Walmart historically has more police calls a month then other retail stores like HyVee

• The store is in close proximity to a school

• Traffic will increase

• The lot is too small to accommodate the store

I feel for these people and their frustrations. I hate Walmart, they are one of the most deceptive retailers in the nation, and like the Quen Be De, I don’t shop there either.

But, they are within their legal rights to build at that location. It is zoned for exactly that kind of use, and that is probably why the commission approved the site.

As for traffic, welcome to the 21st century. Don’t know what else I can say about that. Also, if you buy a home built next to an empty lot zoned for commercial use, guess what, they might build something there like a Walmart.

As for SF Christian’s gripe about the ‘Children’. Last I checked parents CHOOSE to enroll their kids in that school. It is a private school. SF Public schools have open enrollment, you can enroll your kids in any school you want. If you don’t like your children being educated next to a Walmart, the power is in your hands to change that situation.

There is one issue where I do AGREE with the protesters (besides the fact that I hate Walmart) I think the lot is too small for their store and parking. They will literally be right up against all the other businesses around them. I think this should be the protesters biggest argument against the project, and I do know they have gotten some traction on that issue.

The fact remains though. If Walmart doesn’t build there, some other retailer will, that is what it is zoned for. Is the neighborhood going to fight every retailer that wants to build at that site?

As for city council approval, not sure if they will approve it or not. I know a number of councilors do agree with me on the lot being too small, but you have to realize the tax revenue generated from a Walmart is considerable, and they will take that into account.

What is important to you?

Dr. Kermit Staggers and his wife June

I often ask myself that question. What is important to me before I vote. That is one reason why I am a registered Independent, I try to keep an open mind about politicians. I even vote for Republicans on occasion.

Dr. Kermit Staggers for instance. I do not give money to politicians, I think money is the problem, but sometimes it helps. I have given money to Kermit, twice. Once when he ran for mayor and again now that he is running for council. I’m not the monied elite, just an average Joe who wants to see all of citizens concerns addressed, not just the special interests. My money represents one special interest group. YOU! The taxpaying working class Joe who deserves a voice at city hall.

Kermit is a good man in a field of corrupt, self-interest candidates. Just look at his opponent, raising over $45,000 for a seat she doesn’t even want;

“I actually would have preferred this time that someone else be doing this . . .”

(De Knudson, KELO-TV, Feb 17th)

She claims she is running a positive campaign while Kermit is running a negative one.

Lying in your campaign material about your opponent’s voting record is VERY negative. Maybe she believes her lies? How would she know how Kermit voted anyway, she was to busy watching TV or complaining how she was tired.

Running for office so you can ‘block’ someone from being in office is the highest form of negativity and quite frankly childish playground horseplay. Knudson likes to say Kermit’s press conference yesterday was ridiculous and desperate. Let’s talk about desperation.

At the Democratic forum yesterday, Knudson talked about the Walmart zoning issue, she also commented that “She doesn’t shop at Walmart.” of course she doesn’t. She is so out of touch with what is going on with the average citizen, it makes your head spin.

Is Kermit the best choice for the At-Large council seat? YES! While I would have been thrilled to see some more people run for the seat, I think we should consider ourselves very lucky he stepped up to the plate. We can’t let this opportunity be lost, he must be elected. We need a watchdog of this mayor (who is rumored to have orchestrated this whole Knudson race).

The mayor, Knudson and other city councilors asked SEVERAL people to run against Dr. Staggers. Why did they refuse?

Several reasons were given to me (I spoke face to face with 3 prominent community leaders who were asked), here is the short list;

• They didn’t want to work with this mayor.

• They didn’t want their name attached to the new EC.

• They think the current city council environment is very TOXIC and lacks transparency.

• They think this town is ran by the Chamber, the bankers and the developers, which it is. Many potential candidates don’t want to deal with them and their strong arm tactics.

• They respect Dr. Staggers and want him to WIN!

I encourage everyone to vote, TODAY absentee or show up to the polls on Tuesday. Let’s shut down this money machine. Let’s elect someone who will ask the right questions and demand they be answered. Let’s vote for transparency and shine a little light on city hall.

VOTE FOR STAGGERS!

Congrats to Jeff and Vishnu Bunny Tattoo!

There’s a new player DT Sioux Falls. Vishnu Bunny Tattoo (photos on his website are of his old location) is now located DT next to Kaladi’s on Phillips Avenue. The owner, Jeff Mann has been working hard to open the shop, and had his grand opening last night, the place was packed. Heck even the mayor showed up! (we had an interesting discussion about piercings and tattoos, but I promised not to blog about it 🙂

One of the best part about Jeff’s move to DT is that he will have a lowbrow art gallery in the establishment. I hope to have a show there in the near future and have offered to show my personal lowbrow art collection.

Vishnu Bunny Tattoo will be a nice addition to DT. Congrats!

The monied elite in SF have given Knudson over $27,000 for her campaign

Even more shocking is that she has spent over $42,000 – RUNNING FOR A COUNCIL SEAT! For somebody who is simply running to block Staggers from being on the council again, this is frightening on many levels. It really shows how out of touch Knudson is with the average Joe (spending almost 3x times what the job pays in a year). This has to be a new record in city politics.

READ THE FINANCIAL REPORT: moneybags

This proves two points I have made about running for office in Sioux Falls.

1) IT takes a lot of money, and that is why the average person doesn’t have a chance, even if they knock on many doors.

2) The elite businessmen and developers run this town, and they are not about to give up their power.

On a positive note though, if Staggers beats Knudson, he will prove that the money machine can be toppled.
